Bighorn Sheep Wildlife Viewing

Spot Colorado's iconic bighorn sheep on the canyon walls along the Arkansas River, with peak viewing opportunities in the canyon named for these magnificent animals.

Colorado's State Animal

The Royal Gorge region hosts one of Colorado's largest populations of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. These sure-footed animals navigate the steep canyon walls with remarkable agility, and the area named Bighorn Sheep Canyon offers some of the best viewing opportunities in the state.

Where to Look

Drive Highway 50 west of Canon City through Bighorn Sheep Canyon and scan the rocky slopes above the road. The sheep often graze on grassy ledges or rest on prominent outcrops. They're most visible in winter when they descend to lower elevations and when snow makes their brown coats stand out.

Viewing Tips

Bring binoculars and patience. Pull completely off the road at designated turnouts and avoid approaching the animals. Early morning and late afternoon provide the best lighting for photography and coincide with active grazing periods.
