Day Trips from Canon City: Explore Beyond the Royal Gorge

Canon City's central location in Southern Colorado makes it an ideal basecamp for exploring some of the state's most spectacular destinations. After experiencing the Royal Gorge, venture out to discover what lies within an hour or two of your vacation rental.

Garden of the Gods (1 Hour North)

This free Colorado Springs city park features towering red rock formations that rival any paid attraction. The 15-mile scenic loop drive offers stunning views, while hiking trails of varying difficulty wind among 300-foot sandstone spires. Arrive early to beat crowds and catch morning light on the rocks. The Visitor Center provides geological and cultural context. Plan 2-4 hours.

Pikes Peak (1.5 Hours North)

America's Mountain rises 14,115 feet above sea level with multiple ways to reach the summit. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway offers a scenic train ride to the top, while the Pikes Peak Highway provides a driving option for those who prefer four wheels. At the summit, try the famous high-altitude donuts. Reservations recommended for the cog railway. Plan half to full day.

Cripple Creek & Victor (1 Hour Northwest)

Colorado's gold rush history comes alive in these preserved mining towns accessible via the Gold Belt Tour scenic byway. Cripple Creek offers casinos, the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine underground tour, and Victorian architecture. Victor remains a genuine working town with fewer tourists and more authentic character. The drive itself—through Phantom Canyon or over Shelf Road—is half the adventure.

Wet Mountain Valley & Bishop's Castle (1.5 Hours Southwest)

The 104-mile Wet Mountain Valley Scenic Byway offers spectacular mountain scenery between the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountain ranges. The highlight: Bishop's Castle, a whimsical stone castle built single-handedly by Jim Bishop over 50+ years. It's free to visit, climbable, and unlike anything else in Colorado.

Salida & Hot Springs (1 Hour West)

Follow the Arkansas River upstream to the artsy town of Salida, known for its historic downtown, galleries, and access to multiple hot springs. Mount Princeton Hot Springs offers natural pools in a stunning mountain setting. Combine with a stop at the St. Elmo ghost town near Nathrop for a full day of exploration.

Manitou Springs (1 Hour North)

This quirky town at the base of Pikes Peak features mineral springs you can taste, boutique shopping, art galleries, and the base station for the cog railway. The Cliff Dwellings and Cave of the Winds add family-friendly attractions nearby.

Planning Tips

  • Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak combine well for a Colorado Springs day
  • The Gold Belt Tour works as a loop—go one way, return another
  • Mountain weather changes fast—bring layers even in summer
  • Start early for Pikes Peak to avoid afternoon thunderstorms
  • Hot springs require reservations on busy weekends
